Dialogue Between Past and Future: European Heritage Days Open in Kaunas
On September 18, Kaunas will open its doors to European Heritage Days, celebrated across Lithuania from September 18–26. This year’s theme, “Architectural Heritage: A Window to the Past, a Door to the Future”, invites the public to discover architecture as both memory and inspiration.
The official opening will take place at 3 p.m. at the historic “Romuva” cinema – Lithuania’s oldest functioning cinema, a landmark of interwar modernism awarded the European Heritage Label. The event will feature live music, discussions on the role of heritage in modern life, guided tours, and an exhibition marking 30 years of European Heritage Days in Lithuania.
Distinguished guests, including the Minister of Culture, will greet participants. Experts such as architect Gintaras Balčytis and Vilnius University researcher Lina Hall will reveal hidden stories of Kaunas, UNESCO World Heritage Site, architecture, complemented by rare archival film footage.
The ceremony will also honor individuals and organizations dedicated to preserving heritage with national awards and recognize outstanding restoration projects. Afterwards, visitors are invited to join free guided walks through Kaunas, exploring iconic sites from the Presidential Palace to the city’s first cafés.
European Heritage Days offer a unique opportunity to rediscover our cities, their history, and the architecture that connects past and future.
