Cooperation between the Countries of the Baltic Sea Region

Regional cooperation plays a crucial role in seeking for active and comprehensive cooperation in cultural heritage protection. In promoting cooperation between the Countries of the Baltic Sea Region, the activities of the Baltic Region Heritage Committee and its specialized working groups are of particular significance.
 
The Baltic Region Heritage Committee – BRHC (the former Monitoring Group on cultural heritage in the Baltic Sea States) is an organization of cultural heritage experts that was established in 1998. The aim of the organization is to develop regional cooperation in cultural heritage protection, to share knowledge and experience, to formulate priority directions of cooperation, to initiate and support specific regional proposals and initiatives.
 
The members of the BRHC - the representatives of the national cultural heritage organizations of the countries of the Council of the Baltic Sea States. The participating countries: Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Norway, Finland, Sweden, Germany. The Russian Federation currently has no active members.
 
There are 6 specialized working groups operating in the composition of the BRHC: 
 
1.    The Underwater Cultural Heritage
2.    The Coastal Heritage 
3.    The 20th Century Built Cultural Heritage 
4.    Climate Change
5.    Illicit traffic of cultural goods
6.    Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe

Representatives delegated by the Department of Cultural Heritage actively participate in the activities of the BRHC and its specialised working groups.
  
From 2003, the BRHC organises regional cultural heritage forums. The last forum took place in September 2023 in Gdansk, Poland (Gdańsk Forum 2023 – Baltic Region Heritage Committee (cbss.org)).
