Baltic Heritage Institutions Share Experience in Tallinn
On 9 September 2026, representatives of the cultural heritage authorities of Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia met in Tallinn to discuss current challenges, achievements and new projects in heritage protection.
The meeting brought together Vidmantas Bezaras, Director of Lithuania’s Department of Cultural Heritage (KPD), Marilin Mihkelson, Head of the Estonian National Heritage Board, and Ināra Bula, Head of the National Heritage Board of Latvia, together with specialists from the three institutions.
The discussions focused on balancing renewable energy development with heritage protection, renovation of protected buildings, and the expansion of digital services in the heritage sector.
Lithuanian representatives presented the modernisation of the Cultural Heritage Register and KPEPIS systems. Once completed, the integrated portal will provide more than 30 electronic services, improved search and mapping tools, access to 3D models of heritage sites, and closer integration with other state information systems.
The Estonian hosts also organised a study visit to Tallinna Linnahall, a major example of late Soviet modernist architecture. The partly abandoned building highlighted challenges shared by all three Baltic countries: how to adapt protected architectural heritage to contemporary needs while ensuring its long-term viability.
The next meeting of the three Baltic heritage protection authorities is planned to take place in Vilnius in 2027.
