Heritage in Lithuania

356.JPGAs of 2023, there were as many as 35,814 cultural values in the database of the Register of Cultural Property. As many as 26,213 of them are immovable cultural property and 9,601 are movable cultural values.

According to the legal framework of the Republic of Lithuania, immovable objects of cultural heritage are divided into registered objects (according to the data of 2023, there were 13, 241 of them in Lithuania), objects protected by the State (8,187, accordingly), monuments of culture (2,344, accordingly) and objects protected by municipalities (135, accordingly). According to their status, movable cultural property can be classified as cultural monuments (in 2023, their number totalled 95 in Lithuania) and registered objects (9,506, accordingly).

According to the type, a cultural heritage object can be classified as a site, a complex, or an individual object. In terms of significance, it can be divided into national, regional, and local significance levels.

When entering an object of cultural heritage into the Register of Cultural Property, the nature of valuable qualities (or a combination thereof) that determines its significance shall be assessed: archaeological, underwater, mythological, ethno-cultural, architectural, urban, green plantations, engineering, historical, memorial, artistic, sacred, cultural expression.
