Functions of the Department within the Lithuanian cultural heritage protection system
The Department provides methodological guidance for the protection of immovable cultural heritage and prepares drafts of legal acts regulating the protection of immovable cultural heritage. It also organises and coordinates the inventory, disclosure and monitoring of immovable cultural heritage, and maintains the Register of Cultural Property and the documents related to this Register. It gives advice on the issues relating to the management of cultural heritage objects, provides conclusions on whether the project proposals prepared by the managers intending to carry out the maintenance of cultural heritage objects comply with the heritage protection requirements, monitors the management and maintenance of cultural heritage, stops the actions carried out by natural and legal persons in immovable cultural values, their territories, and in the zones of the protection of cultural heritage if violations of heritage protection requirements are detected. It draws up programmes of the maintenance and compensation of immovable cultural heritage and organises their implementation. It also concludes agreements with managers on the protection of cultural heritage sites and prepares and issues regulations for the protection of cultural heritage sites of national and regional significance. The Department addresses the issues relating to organizing and carrying out research into immovable cultural heritage and movable cultural property. It also organises and coordinates recognition and dissemination of knowledge of immovable cultural heritage and movable cultural property, and cooperates with the relevant foreign and international institutions.
